Since a free society cultivates peaceful relations with other countries, since its military forces are not involved in unnecessary foreign entanglements, and since its policies generally encourage the development of other freedom-loving, peaceful nations across the globe, it requires a much smaller military budget than either a mixed-economy state or a totalitarian socialist government. Summary of Tendencies of Political Systems

A socialist state leads not only to the loss of all freedoms, but more generally to circumstances that are extremely adverse to human life and happiness, as well as to the intentions of most advocates of socialism. It is important to understand that these negative circumstances are not unique to the Communist, fascist, and National Socialist régimes of the twentieth century, but rather are implicit in the very nature of socialism.      Next page
