As the four graphs together illustrate, the natural tendencies of a mixed-economy society transform it into something quite different from what its supporters originally envisioned:

• Individual freedom is not merely limited, but is destroyed as governmental interference into the economy and into private life grows continually and almost inexorably.

• The state ceases to serve the common interests of all citizens and becomes a source of personal advantage and special privilege.

• Standards of living are depressed across all strata of society.

• Benevolent social relations give way to rising crime and violence, rivalry among mutually antagonistic groups, and dehumanizing attitudes of individuals toward one another.
