On American Dollars Held Abroad (optional material)
Ultimately, it must be remembered, money is only a medium of exchange. Consequently, foreigners accept American dollars with the eventual expectation of trading them (directly or indirectly) for non-monetary goods and services. As the stock of dollars held by foreign individuals and institutions grows, therefore, they tend to expend increasing amounts on American exports until their stock of dollars stabilizes.
