The Austrian Theory of the Business Cycle (optional material)
The etiology of the business cycle was first successfully traced by Ludwig von Mises in 1912 in his Theorie des Geldes und der Umlaufsmittel [The Theory of Money and Credit] and was further developed and promoted by Friedrich A. Hayek, leading to the latter's Nobel prize in 1974. An English translation of Mises's original volume is available online.
