The Illusory U. S. Government "Surplus" (optional material)
According to the August 2000 Economics Indicators (available online), published by the Congressional Joint Economic Committee, the federal debt increased from $3,598.5 billion to $5,657.0 billion between 1991 and 2000 (figures for 2000 are projected). It increased significantly every year during that period, despite the vaunted "surpluses" of recent years. The rising debt trend is also clear from another website, maintained by the U. S. Treasury Department, which shows day-to-day changes in the national debt as well as figures for the end of each fiscal year since 1971.
