The marginal utility of a good, the student should recall, is determined by the services a single unit can provide to one's purposes, taking into account one's present stock and other available resources. If many of the services that a unit of private education could supply are already available through "free" government schools, then that unit has much less marginal utility than it might otherwise provide.
