The Universality of Time Preference (optional material)
In this instance, Crusoe is producing tree houses for other individuals in an exchange economy. The issue of time preference arises even when he acts as a lone individual, however. For instance, if he wishes to build a number of bamboo-pole structures for his own consumption, he will still need to determine whether he wishes to postpone consumption in order to fashion a better axe and achieve an improved long-run rate of return.
